Explanation for Question 2 From the Math (Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3

Now here for number two, we're given a table with data values, 2 right? So we're looking at the age of a group of people and also 3 their gender. So it tells us that there's 25 people total, 4 right? And we see that number right here as well, who entered a contest. 5 And if the contest winner is going to be selected at random, 6 what is the probability that the winner will be either a female under the 7 age of 40? So there's one condition that we could get female under the 8 age of 40 or a male age, 9 40 and older. Right? So first off, 10 let's find those two boxes that we're interested in. 11 Let me get a different color on this one. So a female under 40, 12 right? So we have to go to our female box under 40. 13 So there's eight of them. And then a male aged, 14 40 or older, we look at the male, 15 we see 40 and older. 16 There's two of them. Right? 17 And so our question is, what do we do with these numbers? 18 Right? And we should notice that they said, or, 19 and whenever you have two numbers in this case, 20 an eight and a two separated by the word or in a probability problem, 21 you're always going to want to add those two numbers together. 22 And other option, if it didn't say, or it could have said, 23 and, and if it says, 24 and then you have to multiply, 25 but in this case it said, or so we know we're going to be 26 adding eight plus two, 27 which is 10, right. And we see that this is a fraction. 28 And so we shouldn't have to go any further than this because all o...
