Explanation for Question 13 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 1

So in number 13, we're asked to combine the two sentences. 2 And the one thing you want to be wary of when you're trying to 3 combine sentences is that you don't want to be repetitive. 4 You want to try your best, not to say the same words twice. 5 And if we look in our sentence right here, 6 we talk about thawing. And now if we look at B and C, 7 we see that both of them refer to the thawing again, 8 and this is unnecessary, right? Because we've already said these words. 9 And so we don't want to say them a second time. There's probably a 10 way to combine the sentences without saying thawing twice. 11 And so BNC, although they're grammatically correct, 12 they have a comma and separating two independent clauses. 13 They are repetitive. And so that's why they're incorrect. 14 Now D is grammatically incorrect because the has an independent clause and an independent 15 clause, and it just puts a conjunction. 16 It only puts the, and what's missing is the comma. 17 So to make D correct, we would have needed a comma. 18 Now a is going to be our correct answer because first off it's grammatically 19 correct. We have an independent clause. And then we have a dependent clause starting 20 with a comma, a comma, starting with a verb that has an ING, 21 right? And when you see that ING verb, 22 we can put a comma beforehand. So this comment is correct. 23 And also a is not repetitive. It doesn't say thawing twice, 24 which is what we like to see. And so a is going to be 25 our best answer.
