Explanation for Question 22 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat

For question 22, our best answer's going to be a, 2 and the sense says that the Dodo may not even, 3 or may not have been the most graceful of birds or avian inside, 4 but neither blank. Um, 5 the clownish creature that was so awful, that is so often imagined. 6 We can see that the differences between our answer choices here is tense, 7 right, as it is a has, 8 was, which is past tense. B has well, 9 which is a future C has, 10 is, which is present. And it also D has well, 11 which is future. And so the way to solve this question is to go 12 back into the sentence, other parts of the sentence rather, 13 and see if it's talking in past present or future tense. 14 So that's what we look at closely. And we see that the Dodo may 15 not have been the most, uh, graceful bird, 16 right? 17 So we're talking about the Dodo in the past, 18 we're describing the Dodo as a bird of the past because it's extinct, 19 right? And so that's why AI is right as, 20 is the only answer choice that shows a verb in the past tense. 21 But perhaps you got confused, um, 22 by this neither blank, 23 the CRA the clownish creature that was so often imagined just because there's an 24 is here does not mean that we're actually talking about the Dodo in the 25 present tense. Again, the Dodo is extinct. 26 So it doesn't make sense to say that it isn't a clownish bird, 27 because that would be like saying the Dodo still exists today. 28 And we know that can't be true because it's an extinct bird. 29 And if it's extinct, it can't exist in the future. 30 And it also can't exist in the present. 31 And that is why a, is our best answer.
