Explanation for Question 5 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 8

So question five tells us that the width of a rectangular dance for floor 2 is w feet. And the length of the floor is six feet longer than 3 the width. And we need to know what expresses the perimeter, 4 right? So let's just start very generally we have a rectangular dance floor 5 and we have width, which we'll call w for now. 6 And then we have lengths, which we'll call L for now. 7 And if we're finding the perimeter P then we have to add all four 8 side links together. So we're adding w plus length plus w 9 plus length. In other words, 10 we can say that we're adding P is equal to two w right? 11 Cause I have two w so I'm combining like terms and then these two 12 ELLs, right? So perimeters two w times two L and now 13 we can see, right. If we go deeper into this problem, 14 they've given us a little bit more information about what Elemis they tell us 15 that the length is six feet longer than the width. 16 And so we need to turn this into an equation for them. 17 We need to take the words, turn them into an equation. 18 So they're telling us what length is. So length is equal to something, 19 and it's six feet longer than the width, 20 just like starting with the width and then adding six feet to that. 21 So that you're six feet longer than the width. So now I can take 22 this equation kind of like assistance of equations, 23 but not, not as difficult. I can take this and simply sub it where 24 I have my L right? 25 So this L here will become this expression. 26 So my perimeter is two w plus two times w plus six. 27 So perimeter, now I can, uh, simplify, 28 there should be two here. Um, 29 I have two w plus distributing the two, 30 right? Two w plus two w plus 12, 31 I can combine like terms two w plus two w is four w the 32 plus 12 will stay. And so that gives us a correct answer of B.
