Explanation for Question 16 From the Math (Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 8
So number 16 has given us a data table and it's talking 2 about vitamin C pills and whether or not people can track to the cult. 3 And the question asks us what proportion of adults who received a sugar pill 4 reported contracting a cold, right? 5 So we know that we're going to think about some number of people divided 6 by a total that we're looking at. And so one easy place to make 7 a mistake in this problem is to think that our total, 8 our denominator is going to be 300, 9 right? Cause that's the total number of people, but we can figure out that 10 it's not 300, by looking more closely at the problem. 11 Right, right here, where it says of adults who received a sugar pill. 12 When you see this word of that is an indication that our total is 13 not going to be the actual total, but a subset of the total. 14 When it's asking us what proportion of adults who received a sugar pill, 15 then we know that our total, for our fraction, 16 at least what goes into the denominator is going to be the total number 17 of adults who received a sugar pill. 18 And so it looks like the total adults who received a sugar pill was 19 actually 150, not 300. 20 So our denominator will have a 300. And then in our numerator, 21 it's contracting a cold, right? 22 But we're only looking at this row here. 23 We're only looking at the row of adults who take, 24 who took a sugar pill. And so the people who contracted a cold while 25 taking a sugar pill was 33. So we're looking at 33 26 over one 50. And if we put 27 that in our calculator, we get 0.2, 28 two or 11 over 50. 29 And so that gives us the correct answer of B.
