Explanation for Question 14 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4
Now looking at number 14, right? 2 We see the, at the end of the sentence here, 3 we're talking about spending $1 60 cents for every dollar that they would have spent 4 on food that is grown in a manner that is considered conventional. 5 Right. And you might notice that that seems a little wordy. 6 All they're trying to say is that the food is grown conventionally. 7 Um, and so to say, it's grown in a manner to say that it's 8 considered that's very wordy. And so we kind of want to stay away from 9 that. Now, if you look at B, you might say, 10 okay, it's a pretty long answer choice still, 11 but the extra words actually give us new information. 12 Right? However, if we look earlier in the sentence or rather in the paragraph, 13 we see the same information. If there's one thing that the sat hates is 14 repetition. So B's repetitive and we don't want it. 15 Now, C C says conventionally and therefore not organically grown. 16 Now this is a little silly, right? Because if something is conventionally grown, 17 then we already know that it's not organic. 18 There's no need to say the same thing twice. 19 And so D is going to be our best answer because it gets the 20 same message across, right. It's conventionally grown, 21 but it does. So in the most straightforward way with the fewest words possible.
