Now 21 is a punctuation question. So it'll be a good first step to 2 split up our, 3 um, our sentence into two pieces. The first piece goes before the piece of 4 punctuation, and then the second piece goes after the punctuation. 5 Um, and if we look before the punctuation in yellow, 6 we see that it says living independently and demonstrating that demonstrating an intense work 7 ethic. Um, and so this is what we call a dependent clause, 8 right? Because we have a verb, the living, 9 but we don't know who was doing that. We don't have a subject here. 10 So our first point is a dependent clause. 11 Then we have our punctuation. And then in green it says the Harvey girls 12 became known as a transformative force in the American west here. 13 Our subject is Harvey girls. Our verb became or became known. 14 And so it was a complete thought as well. 15 So this is an independent clause, right? 16 And so for looking at answer choice, a, the semi-colon to use a semi-colon, 17 you have to have two independent clauses, but we have a dependent clause first, 18 which means that the semi-colon is not allowed to be used for this particular 19 sentence. And the same thing goes for a colon before a colon. 20 You always need an independent clause. 21 The second half can change sometimes with the colon, 22 but first and foremost, you need to start with an independent clause, 23 which we don't have now, 24 this comment and a comma and or a comma with any conjunction, 25 any of the fan boys, righ...
