The growth of Harvey’s business coincided with the expansion of the Santa Fe Railway, which served large sections of the American West.
Harvey would end up opening dozens of restaurants and dining cars, plus 15 hotels, over his lucrative career.
These benefits enabled the Harvey Girls to save money and build new and exciting lives for themselves in the so-called Wild West.
The compensation was considered excellent at the time, though it may not seem like much money by today’s standards.
Explanation for Question 20 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3
Now for number 20, right. We're trying to find what would logically follow the 2 previous sentence. And that previous sentence tells us about how well-paid the servers 3 at a heart-based restaurants were right. They made a good deal of money for 4 that time period. Um, they had a lot of, 5 you know, perks of working there, including room and board laundry travel. 6 Um, and so when we're looking at this, we can immediately eliminate a and 7 B because a and B are super off topic, 8 right? We didn't talk about the railway or the American west, 9 which that means that that sense wouldn't flow very well. 10 Um, and then beats, uh, really talks about only Harvey's career. 11 Now we're not talking about Harvey's career at this point in the passage, 12 we're talking about his servers and how much money they make. 13 Right? And so we look at C and we look at D now C 14 says that these benefits enabled Harvey girls to save money. 15 So it's good that it started off with benefits, right? 16 Because right before is where they listed the benefits, 17 which were all the things that weren't, you know, their actual money that they 18 made. But we're kind of like the perks of the job. 19 And then see, also tell us more about what that money allowed the servers 20 to do, right? So they could save, 21 they could have exciting lives and the wild west. 22 So C is really on topic because it's completely describing the servers, 23 their compensation, and what the servers did with that compensation....
