Explanation for Question 8 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 1

So question number eight has given us some options here for what verb we 2 want to use is let's read the sentence. It says it is an excellent 3 source of calcium and protein serves to be a digestive aid and blank. 4 You calories in unsweetened and low and non-fat forms. 5 So we can see that what's happening here is we've created a list, 6 right? We have our colon right here. 7 And then our first verb is, is it's is an excellent source, 8 right? And then we have serves as the digestive aid. 9 And now we say something with the verb contain fewer calories. 10 And so now we need to look at the verb tense of the other 11 two verbs that are in our list. We can see that is, 12 is just normal. Present tense serves is also normal present, 13 and neither of them are this first one has an it, 14 but the second one doesn't have it. 15 Right. So really what's happening here is in the sentence. 16 We say it first at the beginning, 17 and then we don't say it again. So saying it before contains is 18 not going to be good because we didn't say it before serves. 19 We just wanted to say at once at the beginning of our list. 20 And so for that reason, a is no good. Right? And we know containing 21 isn't going to work because neither, neither of our other verbs have an ING 22 at the end, contains sounds a lot. 23 Like the other verbs we used, right. Serves as a lot like contains they're 24 both normal present tense, singular, 25 and neither of the other verbs have a will in front of them. 26 Right. So we don't want the contain to be the only one with a 27 will out in front. And so for those reasons, 28 C is going to be our best answer.
