Explanation for Question 7 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 1

So question seven, the sentence says, nutritionist consider Greek yogurt to be a healthy 2 food. It is an excellent source of calcium and protein, 3 um, serves to be a digestive aid. 4 And so this is where we're working right. Serves to be a digestive aid. 5 And our question is what is the phrase that we say in English serves 6 blank? So the best way to do these types of questions is to read 7 each of your options and then decide which one sounds like something I would 8 actually say, because these are just phrases, 9 right? They're just common phrases in the English language. 10 And so there's not necessarily a grammar rule, like with commas, 11 um, where you can say, oh, here's a clause, that's independent, 12 here's a closet. That's the pendant. So I'll know which word to use, 13 but rather there's only one way that we say these words together in English 14 and we just have to know how it said, right. 15 So serves to be, um, 16 that should sound a little bit funky. If we read on serves as this 17 should sound a little bit more like something you would say serves, 18 like is also not something you would say and serves for is also 19 not the correct way to say the phrase. And so here, 20 the correct answer is going to be B because something serves as something and 21 there's really no other explanation for these types of questions other than this is 22 typically how we say it in the English language. 23 Um, and so the best way to do these is just by intuition and 24 trying to see which one sounds best. And which sounds like something you would 25 say.
