Explanation for Question 41 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 1

So for 41, the first thing we need to do is decide if the 2 apostrophe is appropriate here and the apostrophe is going to show 3 possession. And if we read our sentence, 4 it says these days, many students majoring in philosophy have no intention of becoming 5 philosophers, right? So it says many students majoring in philosophy. 6 And this, as it is so shows that students is possessive. 7 So we can ask ourselves, do the students own majoring, 8 this majoring belong to the students. 9 And the answer is no. Here possession doesn't make as much sense because that 10 would be like saying the student's own majoring. 11 What makes more sense is to see that we're talking about plural students, 12 right? There are multiple students that are majoring in philosophy. 13 What's here is a verb. And whenever you have, 14 um, a subject in front of a verb with an apostrophe, 15 you should be skeptical, right? 16 Because people can't own verbs. So because this is a verb, 17 we know the apostrophe is no good. And our question is now, 18 should we say students, majoring or students major is let's take a look. 19 These days, many students major in philosophy have no intention. 20 And so this part of the sentence no longer makes sense. 21 If we say students major and philosophy because of the word have, 22 right, this is our actual verb of the sentence. 23 Even though major ring is a verb. It's not the, 24 not the predominant verb of the sentence. 25 And so because of have major, 26 isn't going to work and you can hear it in the way it sounds 27 as well. So our best is going to be B students, 28 majoring in philosophy.
