Explanation for Question 49 From the Reading Section on the 2021 March Sat
Question 49 asks about the relationship between the two passages. 2 So we see, remember that the first passage kind of presents 3 a finding that the second passage rejects. 4 So the first passage comes up with this one, 5 this one amount. Um, and then the second passage kind of talks about, 6 um, contrasting that event, 7 um, changing their conceptual framework. 8 So down here highlights exactly the differences between that previous study and this 9 new one described in passage two. So like in our answer choices choice a 10 says the results of a study outlined in to challenge the results of a 11 study outlined in passage one. 12 That's exactly correct. We see that passage is kind of disputing the findings of 13 passage one using a different study. Um, 14 now answer choice B the scientist discussed and passage two extended the research of 15 passage one into a new field. 16 Um, this isn't correct. 17 It's not clear what that new field would be. 18 Um, and they also didn't extend the research. 19 They kind of did their own research, um, using a different technique. 20 And so twice CSI's the data shown in to support the hypothesis put forth 21 by one. That's definitely not the case. 22 Passage two does not support the previous conclusion. 23 It actually rejects it. So C is out an answer choice, 24 D the researchers of passage to identified variables that the researchers have one failed 25 to consider. Um, there's not really a clear identification of what those variables 26 are, so we can eliminate this choice. Um, 27 it does kind of relate to how passage, 28 two authors, reject passage one's finding, 29 um, but really to get a clearer statement of that idea. 30 We want to go to answer twice I passage to rejects the findings of 31 passage one. And once again, we can kind of see that evidence right 32 here at this part of the passage that says a new result, 33 sharply contrast, the estimate published in 2011.
