[Video] Q5: The table shows the distribution by breed and sex of dogs that received a vaccine from a veterinarian during the month of july. if a male dog that received a vaccine during the month of july is selected at random, what is the probability that the dog breed is alaska malamute?

Explanation for Question 5 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2020 October Sat

So question number five gives us a table with some statistics data, 2 and we can see that the question wants to know if a male dog 3 that received a vaccine in the month of July is selected at random. 4 So we need to know that what we're choosing from the group that we're 5 choosing from is male dogs, right? 6 Here's the column for male dogs. And we can see that the total of 7 male dogs would be six plus four. We added our own column for 8 totals. We can see that we're actually choosing from 10 dogs, 9 the male dogs. So for maybe a fraction to show us the probability, 10 right? This question is asking for probability. If we're making a fraction, 11 we're going to want 10 on the bottom, because that's the total that we're 12 choosing from. And it wants to know what is the probability that that dog 13 breed is Alaskan Malamute. 14 So now within that male column, we look and see, 15 okay, how many males are Alaskan Malamute? 16 And there are six, so six successful options here, 17 right? There are six Alaskan Malamute that are males and six out of 10 18 gives us 0.6. So our best answer is going to be, 19 see the hardest part about this problem. 20 Most likely is that you need to know you're choosing from 10 males. 21 The reason we know that it's only the males is they tell us here, 22 if a male dog is selected at random, they don't say if any dog 23 is likely at random, just the males. So that narrows us down to the 24 male dogs, which has a denominator of 10.
