Explanation for Question 7 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat
Now question number seven is a punctuation question. 2 And our correct answer is going to be D we want to have two 3 commas here. And now, if we look at what's happening at seven, 4 we can see, it says some exit dusters returned to their familiar terrain, 5 to the familiar terrain of their home states, 6 but others, including Hickman and her husband, 7 Daniel decided to stay in the new farming villages. 8 And so the fact that this has a comma right here, 9 right? Shows us that what's happening here is a really, 10 we have an, a positive phrase. 11 We're taking some extra information and putting it into this, 12 into the sentence, but we want to set it off in commas like we 13 have here, right? So that's why a and B are going to 14 be wrong because you own, you can't use, 15 um, first off you can't use a colon at all for an, 16 a positive phrase. 17 So a is wrong because of the use of a colon, 18 whereas B is wrong because of the dash, 19 right? If we start with the comma or in this case, 20 if we ended with the comma, you have to use a comment earlier on 21 for your positive phrase, you can't mix and match, right? 22 So if we use one comma like we did here, 23 we have to also use commas earlier. 24 Um, additionally for C, we're not supposed to be using, 25 um, semi-colons for a positive phrases. 26 So the best thing to do here is to take this a positive phrase 27 and set it off with a comma, but, 28 and then others comma, 29 including Hickman and her husband. 30 Right? So essentially just to reiterate, 31 including Hickman and her husband, Daniel is our a positive phrase, 32 which is why we want to put the comma after others like the does. 33 And then we want the comma before, but because we're connecting two independent clauses 34 and one way to connect two independent clauses is with a comma and a 35 conjunction such as, but right. 36 And so with all of that in mind, our best, answer's going to be 37 D.
