Explanation for Question 6 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat
Now question six is a word choice question, 2 right? And our best answer is going to be B. So we want to 3 use the word terrain. Now, if we read our sentence with the correct word, 4 it says some exit dusters returned to the familiar terrain of their home states, 5 but others, including Hickman and her husband, Daniel decided to stay in new farming, 6 villagers villages. Right? 7 So the reason terrain is going to be the best word is because we're 8 talking about the land, right? We're talking about farming villages, 9 um, which is really talking about land and where they're living on the land, 10 which is, uh, best synonym, the best in, and it would be terrain. 11 Now, perhaps the best way to think about these questions, really it's not to 12 look for the right answer, but to eliminate answer choices until you arrive at 13 the best answer. Now, the reason that six is not as good as 14 terrain or answer choice, a rather it's not as good as terrain is because 15 it just talks about an expanse, right? 16 And an expanse doesn't necessarily have to be land. 17 We want something that really talks about land. 18 If it had said expanse of land, 19 it might've been good enough, but it just wasn't quite as specific as we 20 want it. Now C says spread and just like a 21 spread can be anything, right? You can have a spread of food. 22 Uh, it doesn't have to be land. In fact, 23 spread often as it used to refer to land. 24 So we're missing that connection there with sea. And finally D locale refers 25 to one specific place. So it's like one location. 26 Whereas here we're not talking about a singular specific location, 27 but we're talking about, um, a familiar way of the land. 28 The characteristics of the land are familiar. It's not one specific location that's familiar. 29 And so with that in mind, our best answer has to be B.
