Explanation for Question 19 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat
Not for number 19, our best answer's going to be C. 2 So let's take a look at the sentence, right? It says the team created 3 similar models for eight of the dodos presumed closest relatives, 4 including several extant species blank calculated the ratio of brain volume, 5 that dah, dah, dah. And so we can see here from this sentence that 6 what we have is two independent clauses. 7 One that I've highlighted in blue. And the other one that I've highlighted in 8 purple. So in blue are independent clause. 9 The team that's our subject and our verb is going to be created. 10 So the team created models. And then our second sentence, 11 or our second independent clause has they, 12 is our subject and calculated is our verb. 13 And so if I have an independent clause followed by an independent clause, 14 I need to separate them with a comma and a conjunction, 15 a comma and a conjunction, right? 16 And so as it is, let me zoom in here. So you can see 17 we have a comma, but they is not a conjunction, 18 right? I'm missing that conjunction there. And C is the only one that actually 19 puts in that conjunction. Um, 20 so a is wrong because it's missing the conjunction. 21 B also is not a fan boy, 22 right? Fanboys are coordinating conjunctions. 23 Those are the ones that you're allowed to use the separate two independent clauses. 24 So just for clarity, the fanboys are for and nor, 25 but or yet. So all the different conjunctions and B doesn't 26 have any, and finally D that one's not going to work because it gets 27 rid of the subject from our second independent clause. 28 So it makes the sense not make sense because it doesn't have a subject. 29 So our best answer then is going to be C because it adds that 30 coordinating conjunction that is unnecessary to unify the two independent clauses.
