Explanation for Question 10 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat

Now for number 10, our best. Answer's going to be a, 2 because a is the only answer choice that shows the correct form of a 3 list. Now, when we think about lists, 4 the correct form is going to be X comma, 5 Y comma and Z, right? 6 So you need commas to separate everything. And you need an answer before the 7 last item in the list. And here in our list, 8 our first item is going to be banks. That would be our X, 9 Y would be our grocery stores and other businesses would be our Z. 10 And we can see the, as it is, we have a comment and, 11 and then we have a commas to separate. 12 Um, the other two items in the list. 13 Now what's wrong with a B is that it inserts an extra comma between 14 grocery stores. And since grocery stores is one item, 15 it's one why we don't want to put a comment in the middle of 16 it. 17 Now B uses a semi-colon and it uses a comma. 18 And it's true. Semi-colons can be used in lists, 19 but you're not allowed to mix and match. If you use a semi-colon in 20 one place, you need to use a semi-colon and the other places, 21 if you need to use a comma, you should use a comma and all 22 the places. So C is wrong because it mix and matches punctuation, 23 um, and D these wrong again, 24 because it's done some mixing and matching. It's put a semi-colon in one spot, 25 but it's also missing the punctuation after grocery stores. 26 And so ASB only answer choice that correctly follows the form of a list. 27 As we can see up here.
