Explanation for Question 15 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the 2019 May Sat

So question 15 asks the dimensions of a right rectangular prism are 2 four inches by five inches by six inches. 3 What is the surface area in square inches of the prison? 4 Now with questions like these, I really recommend drawing them out. 5 I think that can really help you avoid making mistakes and just to better 6 visualize the problem. So I went ahead and did that right here, 7 and I filled in the dimensions that I was given. 8 So the face of the rectangular prism is four by five. 9 And the length of it is six. I also drew out what the different 10 sides look like. So the square sides are not square sides, 11 but the smaller sides are four by five. 12 And the longer sides are four by six. 13 So to find the surface area, all I have to do is to find 14 the area of all six sides and add them together. 15 Two of the sides are four by five. So I'm going to do four 16 times five times two, 17 and that's equal to 46 of the sides 18 are four by six. I'm sorry. 19 Four of the sides are four by six. So I'm going to do four 20 times four times six, 21 and that's equal to 108. 22 And then I need to add those two things together to get the total 23 surface area. And when I do that, 24 I get 148 or D as the correct 25 answer.
