Explanation for Question 8 From the Writing Section on the 2019 April Sat

Now here in number eight, we're looking at the sentence that says he emphasized 2 the need for a spirit of love and worldwide brotherhood from facing challenges 3 in the future. And so the question really is what is the preposition that 4 we want to put? And so a preposition just to refresh your memory is 5 really a relationship word. And by 6 relationship, I mean more so a spatial relationship. 7 For example, I went through the 8 door and went through the door. 9 That's describing my relationship to the door. 10 So words like through, around, 11 by behind, and there's more and more of those are prepositions, 12 right? So we can see the main difference here between all of these is 13 the preposition. And when you have a question like this, 14 this is really more of just the common phrases question for English. 15 There's not a particular grammar rule with dependent clauses or independent clauses, 16 like you'd see with commas and stuff like that. Um, 17 but the question really is how would I say this phrase in English? 18 And the answer is that we say in facing, 19 right, we don't say from facing and the facing is regardless, 20 uh, with regards to confronting something. 21 Um, and we say in facing something, 22 that's the common English phrase. And so whenever you see a change in preposition 23 and all your answer choices, just try to step back for a second and 24 ask yourself, how would you say the sentence naturally in a conversation. 25 And that will usually lead you to the correct answer.
