Explanation for Question 9 From the Writing Section on the 2018 May Sat

Question number nine, the sentence currently reads its design also features 2 a solar station that will produce enough energy to power more than 2000 homes. 3 So what we see here is our different answer choices, 4 listing out different potential, um, 5 pronouns to potentially use in front of it's design or subjects that we can 6 use. Um, so the first thing we need to do here is kind of 7 think through what is it's referring to. 8 Um, we see this as it's designed also features, 9 but what design are we talking about here? 10 Um, usually for this, to answer this, we're going to go back to the 11 previous sentence. In this case, the previous sentence says coastline restoration, 12 introduces water, observing plants, protecting residential areas from flood damage. 13 Um, so looking back at this previous sentence again, 14 it's not really clear what it's referring to. 15 Um, it could be reforming referring to the restoration maybe, 16 or the construction of these plots of water absorbing plants, 17 but it's not really clear. 18 So we want to make sure that any time that we are introducing a 19 pronoun like it's or there, 20 um, we're actually making it really clear what the subject is because the subject 21 isn't clear here, we want to avoid using a pronoun and just directly 22 state our subject. In this case, the subject is the park answer choice date. 23 It makes much more sense to say the Park's design also features than to 24 use its or there, which would make it confusing to the reader. 25 Exactly what subject we're talking about. We always want that subject to be super 26 clear. Um, and in the case of answer, 27 choice B um, this it's with an apostrophe actually means 28 it is. So if you read that back, 29 that doesn't make sense at all. It is designed also features doesn't really sound 30 correct. So our correct answer for question number nine should be D we want 31 to make this subject as clear as possible.
