Explanation for Question 11 From the Math (Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 8
So question 11 tells us that Jenny has a pitcher that contains one gallon 2 of water. And we want to know how many times could Jenny fill the 3 cup from earlier up here with all the water in 4 that picture. And they also give us this conversion, 5 that one gallon is 128 fluid ounces. 6 And so this type of problem is what we call a unit analysis. 7 And where is where you take one amount and you convert it into different 8 units. So you're never changing the amount. You're just changing the units that are 9 attached to it. And so if we look back up at the beginning of 10 the problem, it tells us that the cup can hold a volume of 16 11 fluid ounces, right? So we can start there. 12 We know that the cup can hold 16 fluid ounces, 13 and we want to know how many times we could fill that up with 14 the gallon. Right? And so the best thing to do is to figure out 15 how many fluid ounces are in that gallon, 16 which they tell us here is 128, 17 and then divide that by 16. So we can figure out how many times 18 we could put the cup into, into the gallon of water. 19 And so if we divide those numbers, we 20 get eight, right? And so our best answer is going to be B. 21 Cause that means that we could fill up that cup eight times with the 22 128 fluid ounces from the gallon.
