Explanation for Question 13 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 7

Question 13 says which of the following expressions is equivalent to X squared, 2 minus two X minus five, over X minus three. 3 So I'm going to take this numerator and I'm going to rewrite this as 4 X squared plus negative three X plus X 5 plus negative three plus negative two. 6 And that's all over X minus three. 7 Then I could factor this into X times X minus three, 8 plus X minus three, 9 plus negative two, all over X minus three. 10 Now X over X or times X minus three, 11 over X minus three. Uh, 12 cancels out the X, Y is threes. And that just becomes X. 13 Then the next part of this is X minus three, 14 over X minus three, which of course just becomes one. 15 And then the final part is negative two over X minus three, 16 and that doesn't simplify at all. So it should still be written as negative 17 two over X minus three. And that X plus one minus two over 18 X minus three is answer to.
