Explanation for Question 22 From the Math (Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 6

Question 22 gives us this table that reads the number of states with 10 2 or more electoral votes in 2008. 3 Then the question reads in 2008, there were 21 states with 10 or more 4 electoral votes as shown in the table above based on the table. 5 What was the median number of electoral votes for the 21 states? 6 Okay. So we're looking at the median number of electoral votes only for these 7 21 states that have 10 or more electoral votes. 8 And that is exactly what's shown in this table. 9 So trying to find the median, the median is going to be the midpoint 10 of all the numbers within the sample. So in order to try and find 11 the median, let's cross off numbers from each section and try and work our 12 way towards the mid point. 13 So we have one with 55, 1 with 34, 1 with 31 14 and one with 27. So there's four on the uppermost side of the sample. 15 And with that, we can cross out four on the lower most side of 16 the sample with just 10 electoral votes. 17 Next we're going to cross out the two that have 21, 18 the one that has 20 and the one that has 17. 19 So let's just write this to the side. So this is four and total 20 on this side, and this is four in total on this side, this is 21 four on this side. And now, again, this is four on this side, 22 so sure enough, we're now almost to the mid point and we can see 23 that there are two numbers on this side or two samples on this side 24 and three samples on this side. 25 So our median is going to be somewhere in 26 this sample so we can cross out these two and we can 27 kind of envision this group of three as 1, 2, 3 tally 28 marks. We can cross out the two that are 12 and 13 here, 29 and then we can cross out two of the 15 sample. 30 And that leaves our us as the median with 15 electoral 31 votes. So we can pick B as our answer to.
