Explanation for Question 9 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4

Not for number nine. We see that we have a sentence which says hundreds 2 of large, colorful new murals depicting elements of Mexican American life and history 3 appear during this period. Some in designated cultural locations, 4 but many more and abandoned lots on unused buildings or blink 5 painted on, uh, infrastructure. 6 And so what we see here, so we've got a list, right? 7 The first one tells us in abandoned lots. 8 Second thing in our list is on unused buildings. 9 And the third thing in our list is something about infrastructure. 10 And so when we look at the format of the list, we see, 11 you know, here's our first item, the abandoned lost, 12 but before it, we have the word in, right. 13 And in is a preposition. When we write that out for you preposition, 14 which basically means it's a word that shows you a relationship, 15 right? Where am I? 16 I'm in the abandoned lot. Um, 17 and then in our second one, unused buildings also has a preposition word in 18 front of it on. So it was kind of showing you the location relative 19 to the unused building. I'm on the unused building. 20 And so here, as it's written, we now have a verb and 21 a preposition, and that should, 22 you know, ring, ring a bell that this can't be right, 23 because our lists have to be consistent. 24 If these two only start with a preposition, 25 then the third one should also start only with a preposition, 26 not with a verb. And so a has a verb in it. 27 So that's no good. B has a lot of extra words in addition to 28 the preposition, right? They were painted, 29 um, C is just a preposition and D doesn't work because if I delete 30 it, I don't have any preposition. 31 And I need that because my other objects in my list habit, 32 and so C keeps the list consistent. 33 It makes it so that each item in the list starts with a preposition. 34 And then we list the actual item.
