Explanation for Question 32 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4

Not for number 32. This is really a question about what version of the 2 word there you want to use. If we're talking about T H E I 3 R version one, that's the possessive version. 4 When something belongs to someone else, 5 for example, you could say that is their dog, 6 right? If the dog belongs to the people. 7 Now the second version, T H E R E that's used to show location 8 or presence. For example, 9 you could say, I left my bag over there, 10 there being the location of your bag. 11 Or you could say there is a new mall in the store showing the 12 presence or a new, a new store in the mall showing the presence of 13 a new store. And then the final version is a contraction, 14 right? It has the apostrophe, and it's really just the combination of the words 15 they are. So if you could substitute, 16 they are into the place of there and the sentence would still make sense. 17 Then you can use that version of there. 18 And now, if we look at our sentence, we see that it says, 19 um, as interesting as Russ findings are though they're true value lies in their 20 reminder. So we see that we're talking about there, 21 um, with regards to true value and reminder, 22 and we can see that the true value belongs to the findings, 23 right? And so we're talking about their true value, 24 the true value that the findings possess. 25 So first off we want the possessive version of their to go first, 26 so we can eliminate a and C and then finally, 27 uh, the true value lies in their reminder. 28 So is it their reminder possessive or their reminder location, 29 right? Or we're not saying the reminder is over there. 30 We're not referring to location. And we're also not saying there is a reminder, 31 right? We don't see the word is so it can't be present. 32 And so then we can see that it's the reminder that belongs to the 33 findings, the reminder that the findings of give off. 34 So we want possessive again, which leads us to answer choice B.
