Explanation for Question 3 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4

Now number three, we are looking at punctuation here. 2 So first we need to look at our sense and see what is happening 3 before and after the punctuation. And we see to avoid scrutiny, 4 Securus painted the final section of the mural, 5 comma, the centerpiece at night. And so what we need to notice here is 6 that first off to avoid scrutiny is set off in commas, 7 right? It's in a positive phrase, so we can kind of ignore it. 8 That means it's not really important to the sentence. And so focus also here, 9 painted the final section of the mural, 10 the centerpiece at night, and we noticed this comma right here. 11 We've got a comma there, but also this is just one complete sentence. 12 So that comma isn't separating clauses. 13 Most likely what it's doing is starting in 14 a positive phrase. Right? 15 So if we have in a positive phrase, we have to think, 16 okay, what would make sense as the positive phrase? 17 And in this case, it's going to be the center piece, 18 right? So let's try this. 19 You know, if I put a comment at the end, then that makes it 20 in a positive and it would read, Siqueiros painted the final section of the 21 mural, the centerpiece at night. 22 And so that should make sense, right? Because if it's in a positive, 23 then I know I need some type of punctuation, 24 um, after centerpiece, but a positives can only be dashes or commas. 25 So that's why C is incorrect. But since I started with a comma, 26 I need to also end with a calm, I need to be consistent with 27 my punctuation. And the only answer choice that satisfies all of those requirements is 28 B.
