Explanation for Question 5 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4

Now a number five, we're given an expression, 2 right. And were asked, which of the following is equivalent to the expression 3 above. So essentially what they want you to do when they use that phrasing 4 equivalent to is they basically want you to simplify. 5 So I'm going to rewrite this expression three times two X plus one times 6 four X plus one. And I'm going to simplify by, 7 um, distributing these parentheses and the three. 8 So I'll start by distributing the three. Now three times two X, 9 that six X and three times one is three. 10 So my new parentheses will look like this and I'll still be multiplying it 11 by four X plus one. And so to finish off the problem, 12 I'm going to foil out these two parentheses. 13 Now six X, times four X that gives me 24 X squared. 14 So we can eliminate a and D because they don't have a 24 on 15 the X squared term, six X times one gives me a plus six packs, 16 three times four, excuse me, a plus 12 X. 17 Now that means if I combine like terms here, that's a plus 18 X, 18 right? And then finally three times one that's plus three. 19 So here's my answer when I file it out. 20 And that allows us to choose answer choice C.
