Explanation for Question 26 From the Math (Calc) Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 4
Not for question number 26. We're told that X and Y are numbers such 2 that negative X or negative Y rather negative Y is less than X, 3 which was less than normal Y so we need to know which of the 4 following could possibly be true. 5 Right. And so one thing we want to notice about, 6 um, one is that it's saying that if X is positive, 7 it's going to be less than Y. 8 Um, and so what we see here right, is that negative, 9 Y is less than X, 10 but X is less than positive Y. 11 And so does it tell us whether or not, 12 um, Y is a negative or a positive number? 13 Well, let's see if the negative of Y is less than X, 14 I suppose, actually the best way to go about that is going to be, 15 think about first. What if X was negative and then second, 16 what affects was positive? 17 Right. So let's say the X was two that it's possible that Y was 18 three, which would make negative wide negative three. 19 Right? So that's just an example. You could choose other numbers, 20 but these are the numbers that I've chosen here. And I see that the 21 absolute value of two, right? It's just two. 22 And that is in fact less than three. So if X is positive, 23 one seems to check out. So now let's check. 24 If it still works, when X is negative, let's say X was equal to 25 negative two. Um, 26 in this case, if X was equal to negative two, 27 oops, negative two. 28 Um, then we could perhaps say that Y was four, 29 right? Because negative two is less than four. 30 And then this would be negative fo...
