Explanation for Question 4 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3
Now for number four, which they had, um, incorrectly labeled as number two, 2 we're looking at our sentence and it says circadian rhythms, 3 which are controlled by the body's biological clocks, 4 influenced body temperature. And so we need to figure out first off, 5 how do we spell bodies? And so we should know that B O D 6 I E S as it's written is the plural version. 7 Now we're talking about multiple bodies at one time. 8 No, we're talking about circadian rhythms, 9 which control a body's temperature, 10 right? Cause each body has its own circadian rhythm. 11 And so we don't want the plural form. We don't want IES. 12 We want the possessive form, which is body like normal with 13 the apostrophe S and so we know that means a is no 14 good. Um, C and D look like what I just wrote. 15 The reason B is wrong is because it's still got the plural form of 16 bodies. 17 So even though B is also possessive, it's still plural, 18 right? It's possessive because it has the apostrophe, 19 but the plural is what makes it wrong. And so now we need to 20 look at the word clocks, right? We're talking about the body's biological 21 clocks. And so does it make sense for the clocks to have an apostrophe 22 here? Um, and the answer to that is going to be no, 23 right? Because the clocks don't own anything. 24 The clocks are not in possession of something, 25 but the body is in possession of the biological clocks. 26 And so since the clocks does not need to be possessive, 27 we can eliminate the answer choice that has the apostrophe, 28 and that leaves us with saving our answer to number four.
