Explanation for Question 34 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3

Now looking at question number 34, we see this as a punctuation question. 2 And if we read our sentence, it says from Michelangelo's David to Vincent van 3 Gogh series of self portraits to grant Wood's iconic image of the, 4 um, farming couple in American Gothic. 5 These works by human artists have favored representations, 6 um, of their own species and those of other species. 7 And if we look at this first part, right, we have a lot of 8 objects, but we say we have no verbs. 9 Right? And so what's happening here in red is we have a dependent clause 10 and what's happening after these works by human artists. 11 That's an independent clause. It's a complete sense. 12 In other words, it has a, um, a subjects or a subject. 13 These works, and then the verb being have favored. 14 Right. And if I have a dependent clause, 15 I can't end it with a period. 16 Cause dependent clauses are not complete sentences, 17 so we can eliminate a, and we can also eliminate C because I can 18 only use a semi-colon if I have two independent clauses and that's not what 19 I have here. Right. And so with that in mind, 20 then, um, we should also be able to eliminate B as well 21 with just the period. Because again, that hasn't changed the first part of the 22 sentence, which is still a dependent clause. 23 And then the second half would then just say works by human artists have 24 favored representations. That's still an independent clause. 25 Right? So having that first dependent clause and with a period is not very 26 good. Um, and the reason that D is good is because the general grammar 27 role, um, if you haven't seen it is that if you have a dependent 28 clause followed by an independent clause, 29 you want to separate them with a comma, which we see here in answer 30 choice D.
