Explanation for Question 27 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3

Now we're looking at question number 27 and that sentence says that, 2 where does it start? Here's the start way up here. 3 Um, this may not be much of a problem with certain kinds of apples 4 that are not naturally very fragrant, such as granny Smith, 5 but for apples that are prized for their fruity fragrance, 6 such as Macintosh or Macintosh. 7 Um, this could be a problem for consumers that will reject apples, 8 um, blacking the expected of Roma. And so the first thing that I want 9 to point out is that the word that whenever you have that you never 10 have a comma in front of it. That is a word that always lacks 11 a comma, whereas, which is a word that always has a comment 12 in front of it. So we should immediately eliminate a because we don't want 13 to comment in front of it. And it's the same reason for B as 14 well. 15 We would eliminate B because if we say they will reject apples for the, 16 um, for lacking the expected aroma, it's a complete sentence, 17 right? That's what we call an independent clause. And we wouldn't use a comma 18 before an independent clause because what, but what follows before this independent clause, 19 um, is this can be a problem for consumers, 20 which is also an independent clause. So we would need a conjunction if we 21 were to say that, or they, 22 especially for that, we would need a conjunction, 23 which we don't have on hand here. And so now we're either going to 24 use, which are, who both are allowed to have commas in front. 25 And now we see that we were talking about the consumers, 26 right? It's the consumers who will be rejecting the apples and consumers, 27 aren't objects, consumers are people. So we're going to use the more people word 28 here for lack of a better, better term. 29 And that's going to be who, who is always used to refer to people, 30 whereas, which is normally used to refer to something maybe intangible or that's an 31 object. Um, and so with that in mind, 32 then our best answer is.
