Explanation for Question 16 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3

Now for number 16, it asks which choice of best maintains the tone of 2 the overall passage. Right? And so if you read our sentence that says the 3 menu was modeled after those of fine restaurants. 4 So the food was leaves behind the, 5 a sinister fair travelers were accustomed to receiving. 6 Right. And so if we look at our, um, 7 our words here, first, this word sinister, um, 8 right. So that, that kind of shows a very, 9 um, maybe, 10 maybe a little bit dangerous, maybe a little bit evil, 11 perhaps a combination of the two. Right? 12 And so we're not talking about a sinister fair, 13 right? We're not, we don't have a dangerous evil kind of horror movie type 14 tone here. So sinister is not a very good word, 15 um, to be consistent with the rest of the passage. 16 Um, if we look at the word surly, 17 um, certainly is a bit of a conversational word. 18 Um, it's not something that you would use a lot in, 19 in writing. It's something that you would more so say in conversation. 20 Um, and so since this is, you know, a relatively formal essay, 21 B's a bit informal and same with D B and D are both a 22 tablet. Informal, you might say something as icky, 23 right. But if you were in an interview or writing a college application essay, 24 um, you wouldn't want to say icky simply because it's kind of on the 25 childish side and it's a little bit informal. 26 Um, now abysmal abysmal is good because it shows that the Farrah was not 27 very good, right? The fare was not a pleasant for the travelers, 28 but it doesn't show that it was evil. We know the fare wasn't evil 29 and it's also a relatively formal word. So that makes it better than BNB. 30 And so with that in mind that our best answer here is.
