Explanation for Question 10 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 3

Now for number 10, let's take a look at the sentence that says, 2 um, we decided that here, we would say, alternatively, 3 so alternatively businesses can install light tubes, 4 blank pipes placed in the workforce roofs to capture and funnel light down. 5 Right? And so we're deciding, okay, there has to be a common there. 6 That comm is non-negotiable, it's going to be there. 7 And if we look at the part before it says businesses can install light 8 tubes, um, and that's an independent clause. 9 Our subject is businesses are Verbus can, 10 it's a complete thought. So we have an independent clause and then a comma. 11 And if we're going to follow an independent clause with a comma, 12 then we need to know what type of word we use. 13 And we should know you very usefully for the SAP, 14 that the word which will always have a comma in front of it, 15 always, always, always. 16 And so the fact that there's a comma after the independent clause is what 17 really hints to us that we want to use, which are right. 18 Because if we say these are then we'd have an independent clause followed by 19 another independent clause. These are pipes placed in workforce or workplace roofs. 20 That's an independent clause and we're not allowed to separate two independent clauses with 21 just a comma. You'd also need a conjunction. 22 And so that's why a, B and D are all incorrect because all 23 of these would create independent clauses that can not just be separated with a 24 comma, but you are allowed to put the comma before which, 25 and so our best answer then is.
