Explanation for Question 36 From the Writing Section on the Official Sat Practice Test 1

So we have question 36 and it says, because philosophy teaching students, 2 not what to think, but how to think the age old discipline offers consistently 3 useful tools. And so why we can see here is that we actually have 4 another verb in the sentence we say offers, 5 and this is in the present tense, 6 right? Present and singular because it has the S 7 right. It's offers. If we look at the verb, 8 as it is now, it's teaching, it has an ING and this ING isn't 9 going to work because the other verb in the sentence is in the present 10 a singular. So what we want to do is you use the other verbs 11 around us. The tell us what verb tense we should be using. 12 Um, so since teaching is not the same, 13 it's no good teaches is really similar to offers, 14 right? They're both present singular to teach, 15 to teach, seems like it's in the present, right? But when we look at 16 offers, it doesn't have a two in front of it. 17 And so that's why C is no good teaching. 18 And teaching has the same exact issue, 19 right? We have the ING, which we don't have in offers. 20 And so just by looking at the other verbs in the sentence, 21 we can arrive at answer choice B.
