Explanation for Question 9 From the Writing Section on the 2020 October Sat

So question nine is a subject for agreement, 2 question, subject verb agreement. 3 And we know this because if we look at the answer choices, 4 we can see that they're all the same verb, but written in different tenses 5 in different ways. And so whenever you have a subject verb agreement question, 6 your best chance, uh, to getting it right, 7 the best strategy is going to be to first find what the subject is. 8 So let's look at our sentence. It says large instrument manufacturers, 9 such as Steinway, for example, hires instrument technicians to work at their factories 10 and retail stores. And so, 11 as it is, hires might sound pretty good because you see it, 12 Steinway comes right before hires and Steinway is singular. 13 So Steinway hires make sense, right? 14 But we can ask ourselves is Steinway really the verb or the subject. 15 And the answer to this is no right. Steinway is an example, 16 but the actual subject is the large instrument manufacturers is the large 17 instrument manufacturers that hire the technicians. 18 And this is plural, right? 19 So I want the plural form of the verb, 20 which would be higher without the S. And so for that reason, 21 D is going to be our best answer.
