Explanation for Question 41 From the Writing Section on the 2020 October Sat

So for thinking about question 41 or trying to figure out what word goes 2 best, where it says concentrations. And so the best thing that we can do 3 is look at the word before and see that it says measurable. 4 So we want to choose a word that we can actually measure, 5 right? And so you could measure concentrations, 6 right? If you've taken chemistry, you might've seen concentrations in moles. 7 Um, moles is most common, 8 right? But concentrations can be measured in numbers. 9 Portions are not usually measured in numbers, 10 right? Portions are kind of referred to as like plates, 11 right? Like eating a portion size on your plate. 12 And so since portions aren't necessarily measurable, 13 they're not as good of an answer. And the same thing with sums, 14 right? A sum is an amount which is good. 15 We're talking about mounts here, but you can't measure sums, 16 right? There's not a good set number of units for those. 17 And so now you have to decide between concentrations and doses. 18 And so if we think about a dose, we can think about medicine, 19 right. And how your doctor will prescribe you a dose. 20 And so if you're working with a dose, you already know the amount that 21 you're going to get and you take the same amount, 22 the same dose every day. Right? Whereas in this study, 23 we didn't know how much we were going to get. 24 We were curious to measure how much we were going to get, 25 right? So it wasn't necessarily a prescribed or a predetermined number. 26 And so while C shows a predetermined number a does not. 27 So a is measurable and it's most consistent with our information. 28 So is going to be our best choice.
