Explanation for Question 19 From the Writing Section on the 2020 October Sat
So question 19 asks us which aspect of fair use most effectively sets up 2 the next sentence in the paragraph. So I've went ahead and highlighted the next 3 sentence in green. And it says if using a sample hurt the sale 4 of the copyrighted work, then it does not qualify as fair use. 5 So at the main idea of the sentence is that if something is causes 6 damage, if it hurts the copyrighted work, 7 then it's not fair use. So we want to choose an ending that really 8 talks about hurting or damaging. 9 The original work now as is borrow only a small part of it. 10 Doesn't talk about the damage that's done. Just talks about how much is borrowed, 11 right? So that seems a little off topic with the, 12 uh, with the topic of hurt. Now B says does not, 13 or not damage its economic value. So here we have the word damage and 14 that's pretty similar to hurt, right? 15 They could be kind of synonyms. And so B seems pretty good. 16 Seems pretty on topic. Now, 17 C does not incorporate its most memorable aspects. 18 Now we don't talk about memorable aspects. 19 We might assume that that would do the most damage, 20 but we don't know that for sure. We can't make that assumption. 21 And so since we don't explicitly talk about memorable aspects, 22 C is not going to be the best answer. Now D says, 23 use the work for the purpose of commentary or criticism. 24 We certainly don't talk about criticism. 25 Although again, it might be easy to assume that criticism means damage. 26 We can't just make that assumption, right. 27 It needs to be said explicitly in the passage. 28 And so the one that is most direct, most straightforward in con or consistent 29 with the passage is going to be B where we talk about damage.
