Explanation for Question 15 From the Writing Section on the 2020 March Sat

Not for number 15, our best answer is going to be D a semi 2 or a comma here. And the reason it's going to be a comma is 3 because we're taking an independent clause, 4 right? And then we're adding something additional to the end of it. 5 If we look at our sentence, it says that Hume noted that the robust 6 kneecaps of, um, are collect this along with 7 its thick, thick leg bones abroad, 8 pelvis would have provided them with strength and maneuverability. 9 So again, this is all just one independent clause. 10 There's only one subject, um, 11 Hume, and there's only one verb noted, 12 but we can see here that we start with a comma. 13 And the reason we've put a comma there is because we have an, 14 a positive phrase and that a positive phrase is going to go 15 until pelvis. Right? And if we start with an, 16 a positive phrase, we know that there are only two ways to insert that 17 into the sentence for an, 18 a positive, you can use either two dashes or two commas. 19 So C and a should be off the table because we know we need 20 some type of punctuation. The aid doesn't have, 21 and that punctuation can not be a semi-colon like we saw on seat. 22 Now, the reason that punctuation has to be a comma, 23 as we see in D is because earlier on they use the comma and 24 you're not allowed to mix. And max mix and match punctuation. 25 You either have to use two commas or two dashes. 26 You can't use one of each. And so that's why B is incorrect because 27 the dash is out of the game. Since we already use the comma and 28 our best answer has to be C.
