Explanation for Question 32 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2020 March Sat
So for number 32, we're given a list of, 2 uh, numbers, right? And we are told with the median here, 3 the meaning of the dataset has to be eight and also the ares less 4 than 11. So let's start by listing out all of the numbers in order. 5 And then we'll figure out where to put our in the dataset. 6 So as far as our smallest number, and then afterwards, 7 we have two fives, then we have an eight, 8 we have an 11 and we have a 13. And the question is, 9 where do we put our, now we know that ours less than 11. 10 So that means that our is allowed to be in any one of those 11 spots there. And we also know that we want our median to be eight, 12 right? So if we're trying to force the median to be eight, 13 then we're going to want to put our on the right side of the 14 eight. 15 Because that way we would have three numbers on each side of eight what'd 16 you put eight right in the middle. Right? So for example, 17 if you have four or 5, 5, 8 comma, 18 our comment, 11 comma 13, and I were to go and try to find 19 my median by crossing off numbers on both sides, 20 we would end up at eight. So what this means is that R has 21 to be less than 11, right? But it has to be equal to, 22 or greater than eight. I could have another eight right there. 23 That would be totally fine. My median would still be eight. 24 Right? So art could be eight. Art could be nine. 25 Art could be 10, but it can't be greater than 10 because then it 26 would have to be 11, which goes against what they told us in the 27 question. So for this question, you could answer with eight, 28 nine or 10 and you would get the question, right?
