Explanation for Question 5 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2020 March Sat
Now question number five is asking us for 120% of 2000. 2 And so the first thing that I want to point out is that 120% 3 is greater than 100%. And if I have more than 100% 4 of 2000, then I also have more than 2000. 5 Right? So whatever number I choose, 6 it has to be either C or D because a and B are smaller 7 than 2000. So they would in fact be less than a hundred percent, 8 not more than a hundred percent. And so now I just have to figure 9 out C or D, which one is 120%. 10 And the best way to do this is just to use your calculator and 11 start by changing 120% into a decimal. 12 And you kind of do this all the time. I have a feeling because 13 if you were to think of 90%, 14 you know that there's a decimal right here. And to turn it into a 15 PR into a decimal, you move the decimal over to the left to 0.9. 16 In other words, to get from a percentage to a decimal, 17 you divide by a hundred. So you divide by 100. 18 And now I do 120 and I divide it by 100. 19 I get 1.2. So all I need to do now is multiply 20 1.2 times 2000. 21 And when I do that, I'll get 2,400 and my best answer will 22 be C. Right? So to summarize, 23 if you were to get a question similar to this one in the future, 24 what you would need to do is take your percentage and turn it into 25 a decimal by dividing by 100 and then multiply it by the number that 26 you're interested in.
