[Video] Q7: The length of a rectangular tile is 4 times the width of the tile. if the area of the tile is 144 square inches, what is the width of the tile, in inches?

Explanation for Question 7 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the 2019 October Sat

Now in question number seven, we're told that the length of a rectangular tile 2 is four times the width of the tile. And so when we see the 3 word rectangular, we immediately know that this is a geometry question. 4 And whenever you have a geometry geometry question, 5 you always want to draw a picture. 6 That'll help you process the information that you've been given and visualize it a 7 little bit, which often helps you think of what you need to do to 8 solve for the answer. Right? So we have a rectangle and the rectangle has 9 a length and it has a width, but we don't want to talk about 10 the length just as the length. We want to talk about it. 11 In terms of the width, we're told that the length is four times the 12 width. So the length right, 13 is going to be equal to four times. W so instead of writing, 14 L is the length I can write, 15 the length is four w right, four times the width. 16 Um, and then we're told that the area is 144, 17 and then we're asked, what is the whip? So essentially we need now to 18 come up with an equation that will allow us to solve for w and 19 if we think about the equation for area, we know that it's, 20 uh, I guess what's the times length or base times height, 21 all right. It is what time's like. And now we can just kind of 22 plug and chug, right? We know that areas 1 44, 23 we know the width is w and we also know that the, 24 uh, length is four w now, 25 when I multiply w times four, w I'll get that 1 44 is equal to 26 four w squar...
