[Video] Q3: Which choice best combines the sentences at the underlined portion?

Explanation for Question 3 From the Writing Section on the 2019 May Sat

Question three asks which choice best combines sentences at the underlined portion. 2 So right now we have the Alvarez hypothesis first emerged in 1980. 3 In that year, the scientists noted that the high level of Iridium, 4 um, they noticed the high level of already. And I already am. 5 Excuse me. So we're trying to combine this. 6 Um, let's look at our answer choices choice. 7 A says the Alvarez hypothesis first emerged in the year, 8 1980, the year one. So it's unnecessary to include the 9 year here twice. Um, also it's really unnecessary to include the year at all. 10 Since 1980, we can kind of tell from the way these numbers are being 11 used and the format of dates that we repeatedly see that this is going 12 to be a year. It's not necessary to say the year 1980. 13 Um, so B says the Alvarez hypothesis first emerged in 14 1980 in which year the scientists noted. 15 So in which year is again, 16 a little bit unnecessarily wordy. Um, 17 we don't need to include that language. 18 Um, we can get the point across a little bit more briefly and concisely. 19 That's exactly where we're going with answer choice C the Alvarez hypothesis first emerged 20 in 1981, scientists noted the high level of radium. 21 So that's the most concise way to put this and it makes perfect sense 22 answer choice D it uses a semi-colon. 23 It was then that the scientist noted the high level of radium. 24 Since we have independent clauses or, 25 or clauses that can kind of stand on their own on either side of 26 that semi-colon this is grammatically correct, 27 but again, it's unnecessarily wordy. So there's no point in really introducing that 28 sounding home. So for that reason answer choice D is out and see 29 is our best answer for question number three.
