[Video] Q26: A psychologist designed and conducted a study to determine whether playing a certain educational game increases middle school students’ accuracy in adding fractions. for the study, the psychologist chose a random sample of 35 students from all of the students at one of the middle schools in a large city. the psychologist found that students who played the game showed significant improvement in accuracy when adding fractions. what is the largest group to which results of the study can be generalized?

Explanation for Question 26 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2019 May Sat

So question 26 says a psychologist designed and conducted a study to 2 determine whether playing a certain educational game increases middle school students, 3 accuracy and adding fractions for the study. 4 The psychologist chose a random sample of 35 students from all of the students 5 at one of the middle schools in a large city, 6 the psychologist found that students who played the game showed significant improvement in accuracy 7 when adding fractions, what is the larger largest group to which the results 8 of the study can be generalized. 9 So for the results of a study to be generalized, 10 there must be a random sample taken from that group with multiple 11 subjects. So let's find where the random sample was taken from. 12 So it says the random sample with multiple students was taken at a school, 13 a middle school. Now it doesn't say that there was a random sample 14 taken of multiple middle schools and the students within that middle school, 15 which means that you can't generalize the results to anything larger than that 16 one school. So that means that the results from the 35 students 17 can be generalized to only the students at the school. 18 The reason that a is wrong is because you can actually, 19 uh, generalize it to all the students at the school because the random sample 20 is taken. So even though the results can apply to these 35 students, 21 it's not the largest group to which the results of the study can be 22 generalized. So that's why the answer has to be B.
