Explanation for Question 32 From the Writing Section on the 2019 March Sat
And question number 32, we are again, 2 deciding on the appropriate verb tense for the sentence. 3 So let's take a look at the context. 4 Um, the sentence reads if artists were to receive metals during 5 the Olympic games, just as athletes do. And if the competitions were broadcast to 6 the estimated 4 billion viewers tuning in worldwide talented artists, 7 such as London, we're reaching a much broader audience. 8 So it's important to look at the first part of the sentence, 9 to get some clues about what tense is appropriate here. 10 Um, this sentence is presenting us with a hypothetical situation if 11 artists were to receive metals. So that keyword is F so we're talking 12 about an event that didn't occur yet, 13 and it will not necessarily occur. It's just an eventuality. 14 So the verb choice that's used earlier, 15 um, is, were two. So we're two is expressing that hypothetical. 16 The only answer choice out of our choices in 32, 17 that expresses that similar, 18 if this were the case, hypothetical situation is choice D would 19 reach. 20 So what is implying if something were to occur, 21 then some other statement would apply. 22 So answer choice B had reached, 23 this is going to be a past tense. Um, 24 however, we're not referring to something that actually has happened yet. 25 So it doesn't quite make sense and see, 26 well, um, again, this would be a F this would be a future tense, 27 um, but we haven't, we're not referring to something that necessarily will occur. 28 So choice B and C are out, 29 um, and answer choice a we're reaching, 30 um, doesn't quite flow correctly. Um, 31 we're reaching indicates that this is something that is currently taking place, 32 um, or what's taking place in the recent past. 33 Um, and that's not the case. Again, we're talking about a hypothetical, 34 so answer choice D is our best fit.
