Explanation for Question 15 From the Writing Section on the 2019 March Sat

For question number 15, we're trying to figure out which style of punctuation 2 is best for setting off this particular detail from 3 the rest of the sentence. So the full sentence rates in the final scene 4 of the movie, Lloyd's character, a department store worker, 5 trying to impress his girlfriend must climb the outside of a 12 story building. 6 So the detail that we're trying to set apart from the rest of the 7 sentence is this part here, 8 a department store worker, trying to impress his girlfriend without that detail, 9 um, the S the rest of the sentence flows properly and is grammatically correct. 10 It would say Lloyd's character must climb the outside of a 12 story building. 11 So this is the additional detail that we're trying to insert. 12 Keep in mind that anytime we try to insert additional detail into the middle 13 of a sentence, we want to use this same punctuation on either side of 14 that detail. 15 So right now we're using a semi-colon and then a dash. 16 So that's going to be incorrect. We don't want to use a savvy colon 17 and that a dash we want to make it symmetrical on both sides. 18 So answer choice a is definitely out. 19 Let's take a look at the other answer choices to see which one uses 20 the same punctuation to start that little aside and also end it. 21 So, be it does that correctly. It uses two commas, 22 C uses a comma or a semi-colon. 23 And do you use this trust one dash? 24 So CMD have the similar error to a, 25 of actually just using two entirely separate Forbes of punctuation. 26 That doesn't make sense. So we're going to go ahead and select choice B. 27 We have to make sure we're being symmetrical with the punctuation reuse on either 28 side of that side detail. So choice B for question number 15.
