Explanation for Question 12 From the Writing Section on the 2019 March Sat
Now we are looking at the second passage of the March, 2019 2 writing section, looking at number 12. 3 So with number 12, we're being asked about the verb times that was selected 4 here. Currently, the verb is watched. 5 Um, the sentence says Lloyd watched nervously until the climber a 6 Daredevil named to bill Strother made it to safety. 7 So we need to evaluate whether that's the appropriate verb times to use here. 8 Um, an important part of this is we need to evaluate whether the 9 other verbs in the immediate context, 10 give us some, some clues into what verb is most appropriate 11 here. So if we read the first sentence of this passage, 12 it says in 1922, silent film actor and director, 13 Harold Lloyd was walking in downtown Los Angeles when he saw an unusual sight. 14 So we see, he saw as the main verb 15 referring to Lloyd. Um, 16 then we see, um, the fact that a crowd was gathered. 17 So we have a mix of sort of this, 18 um, past heads with the wise was walking, 19 was gathered and also this just standard, 20 past tense he saw. So we're going to match up the same verb tense 21 that we used for. He saw with this verb watched. 22 So here, it makes more sense to say Lloyd watched than it does to 23 introduce a different tent and say, had watched, 24 or has watched. Um, and similarly answer choice. 25 See watches is also out because we're talking about the past tense, 26 so it doesn't make sense to you as a present tense verb. 27 So for that reason, we're going to match up, saw with watched. 28 Those are the same four and just doing that makes our paragraph sound a 29 little bit more consistent. Um, and it's a bit easier for the reader to 30 understand, so we can stick with the no change option for number 12, 31 Lloyd watched.
