On to question number 33, 2 we're being asked what this language about. 3 Very nice and pretty phrases in line 17 4 is intended to show. So this is kind of an author's purpose question. 5 We want to know in order to what, what is the goal of using 6 this phrase? So let's first look at it in context in line 17, 7 we see that the author is saying, um, 8 sometimes very nice and pretty phrases are used to justify this diversion from the 9 democratic road. So when we talk about the diversion from the democratic road, 10 really what the author means here is the violation of what we would 11 expect to see from a democracy, what we would want to see from a 12 democracy. So there's sort of a contradiction here between these 13 nice and pretty phrases and these violations of democracy. 14 So what the author is intending is for nice and pretty phrases to 15 kind of reflect the language that sometimes you use to justify these, 16 what he calls diversions from the democratic road, 17 um, and really emphasized that this is maybe it sounds nice. 18 It sounds like a way to kind of paper over the problem, 19 but in reality, um, it's, 20 it doesn't really do much to solve the, 21 the underlying issue and violations of democracy that are taking place. 22 So answer choice a says, rectify an intolerable situation. 23 This is not really true. Rectify would suggest that the situation is getting fixed 24 or resolved or improved. Um, 25 and that's not the case. This use of nice and pretty phrases is actually 26 used to justify and perpetuate the problem. 27 Um, answer choice, be obscure and indefensible governing system is much closer 28 answer choice, um, and it reflects how these phrases are kind of covering up 29 the problem, uh, answer choice C undermine outspoken critics. 30 That's not really something that we see referenced, 31 uh, and answer choice day to depict daily experience of the majority of citizens. 32 Again, not as relevant.
