[Video] Q27: As used in line 28, "captures" most nearly means

Explanation for Question 27 From the Reading Section on the 2019 March Sat

All right. So for question 27, 2 we are looking at the meaning of word captures in line 3 28. So let's scroll up to the passage to get the 4 context on that. Um, 5 line 28 is right here. Um, 6 when we're talking about the artificial leaf, 7 it says today it is far more efficient than I field grown plant, 8 which captures only 1% of the sunlight's energy. 9 So here captures, refers to the amount of the sunlight that 10 the plant is able to take in, 11 to use, to serve as an input of that photosynthetic 12 process. So if we look at our possible answer choices, 13 we have choice a records. 14 This doesn't quite make sense. Um, 15 in this particular context, B describes again, 16 not suited for this context, see uses is going to be our right answer 17 because here captures just means the amount that's taken in 18 that 1% that is taken in and used in the process of photosynthesis, 19 whether that's, um, in the plant or in the artificial leaf, 20 um, and D conquers again, doesn't sound like it quite fits. 21 Uh, so I think the closest other option here might be, 22 uh, records just since that does work in other contexts. 23 But if you're able to just substitute that word in context, 24 GLC, that which uses only 1% of sunlight's energy makes 25 a lot more sense than any of the other options, 26 making the correct answer choice for 27 choice C.
