[Video] Q36: In the xy-plane, line k intersects the y-axis at the point (0, -6) and passes through the point (2, 2). if the point (20, w) lies on line k, what is the value of w?

Explanation for Question 36 From the Math (Calc) Section on the 2019 March Sat

Question 36 says in the X, 2 Y plane line K intersects the Y axis at the 0.0 negative six 3 and passes through the 0.22, if the point 20 w lies on line 4 K what is the value of w so we're going to start here by 5 creating an equation for this line line. 6 K. So we know that the B value is negative six because 7 that's the Y intercept. So we know that Y is equal to something 8 times X plus negative six. 9 And to figure that out, I just use the Y equals MX plus B 10 formula, which you can use to find the formula or the equation of a 11 line. Now we need to find the slope and we can do that by 12 taking the two points that were given and plugging them into the slope formula, 13 which I've written down here at the bottom, Y two minus Y one over 14 X two minus X one. So that would be two minus negative six, 15 which is just a plus six, over two minus zero. 16 And that gives us, whoops, 17 that gives us eight over two, 18 which is just equal to four. So we know that the slope of this 19 line is four. Now, all we have to do is plug in 20 for 20 the X value and solve for the Y value. 21 So Y is equal to 20 times four minus 22 six, 20 times four is 80 and minus six is equal to 23 74, which means that Y or w is just 24 equal to 74.
