Explanation for Question 9 From the Math (No Calc) Section on the 2019 April Sat
Since number nine is a word problem. 2 I'm going to write out information as it's given to make it a little 3 bit easier to understand. So for a ride, 4 a taxi driver charges, an initial fare of $3 plus 5 40 cents for each one, 6 fifth of a mile driven. 7 If the total charge for a ride is $27, 8 what is the distance traveled in miles? 9 So we're looking for the distance in miles. 10 So now that we have all our information written out, 11 we can write an equation. So there's an initial fee of $3, 12 which is just a flat fee. So that's going to be $3 plus 13 40 cents for each one, 14 fifth of a mile driven. So if you think about it, 15 if I draw a picture, this is all one mile and I split it 16 into five parts. So at this one, 17 fifth of a mile, I'm going to be charged 40 cents for another fifth, 18 another 40 cents. 19 So for each one, fifth, I'm being charged 40 cents. 20 That means for one mile total, 21 I'm going to be charged five times those 40 cents. 22 So I'm going to have a five X in there where 23 X is the number of miles, 24 which is what we're looking for. And then we know our total is equal 25 to 27. 26 So now I can start distributing to solve for X. 27 So three plus 0.4 times five, 28 we'll give you two. So three plus two X equals 29 27. We can subtract three from both sides. 30 That gives you two X equals 24. 31 So X is equal to 12, 32 which is C.
